Very shortly after Fort Henry was captured
on Feb. 6, 1862, Lt. Seth Ledyard Phelps was directed to take the three
"timberclad" (wooden) gunboats (Conestoga, Lexington, Tyler) up the
Tennessee River, destroying RR bridges and capturing or destroying all
of value to the Confederacy. The official report by Phelps of
