Gen. A.S. Johnston's Movements During the Battle of Shiloh

April 6, 1862

This map (taken from Timothy B. Smith's biography, The Iron Dice of Battle: Albert Sidney Johnston and the Civil War in the West, LSU Press, 2023, p. 148) shows Johnston's movements from the opening of the Battle of Shiloh until his wounding and death.  For the most part, Johnston did not function as an army commander---directing his corps and division commanders---but as an ad hoc brigade commander.  His mortal wound was received while leading a charge of Statham's brigade against the eastern end of the Sunken Road/Hornet's Nest position.
