James F. (Jim) Epperson's Civil War Page
Back
in the days when the Internet was young and we were all innocent lambs,
it was commonplace to do a "family webpage." That used to be the
way this site was organized, but as the Web developed, it became a bad
idea. Everything here is now part of my professional
(mathematics) or avocational (Civil War) interests. Well, except
for a lot of pictures of our family canines, sadly all deceased.
This page serves as a "splash page" for several different websites:
- Causes of the Civil War---A
website devoted to archiving mostly period (i.e., antebellum) documents whose
content bears on the political controversies that led to secession, and
therefore to the Civil War.
- Civil War Chronologies---I
have long believed (perhaps this is my mathematical side) that an
accurate chronology of events is a good "first step" toward
understanding any historical event. Thus this very eclectic collection of
chronologies.
- The Siege of Richmond and Petersburg, 1864--1865---This
has long been an interest of mine, and most of the website was
constructed in the period 1995--2005, but has not been updated
much. That is a project of mine for my retirement.
- "If he comes this way, we will take our old line": This is the original text for an article I published in the now-defunct Civil War magazine, Columbiad, in 1998.
- Lee’s Army and the Black Population of Pennsylvania: An overlooked aspect of the Gettysburg campaign: This
is another article I published years ago, and which I am adding to this
webpage. Unless the title is a "hot link," it is not yet
ready. (Sorry.)
- Rebuttals---Over
my time in the online world I have encountered a number of books on the
Civil War that warrented a serious rebuttal. Here they are all
collected.
- Websites for my numerical analysis text, An Introduction to Numerical Methods and Analysis, Second Edition, and Third Edition. The Third Edition site needs a LOT of work.
And, of course, we still have lots of pictures of our Border Collies:
A brief biography of the Author/Publisher.
